Background

This song is a humorous look at old lovers. Yes guys, it’s true: when we women get together we do talk about you. I wrote this after having some funny conversations with my sister and friends that went something like, “Have you ever been with a guy who...?” Names have been omitted to protect the guilty. The song has vocal, acoustic guitars, banjo, harmonica, and acoustic bass.

*Selected for Pulse's Minnesota Homegrown CD, a showcase of the best acoustic singer/songwriters in 1999.

I Had A Lover Once

I had a lover once perhaps you've had him too
He liked his loving in the dark
Did he do the same with you
He turned out the lights it was always the same
We didn't talk 'cause he was ashamed
He was not my favorite lover
So I let him go went to find another

I had a lover once perhaps you've had him too
He rushed his loving out of fear
Did he do the same with you
He was sweet and he was kind
But we spent our loving easing his mind
He was not my favorite lover
So I let him go went to find another

I had a lover once perhaps you've had him too
He liked his loving all night long
Did he do the same with you
He knew how to treat me well
Where he had learned it he wouldn't tell
He became my favorite lover
Then he let me go went to find another

I had a lover once perhaps you've had him too
He played at loving like a sport
Did he do the same with you
He was focused but unaware
'Cause it didn't matter if I was there
He was not my favorite lover
So I let him go hope to find another
