Breaking up is hard to do but it gave this singer-songwriter from Hudson, Wis., inspiration to return to music as well as plenty to sing about. She has a clear, rich, gorgeous folk voice, reminiscent of early Judy Collins, and a sense of music that evokes the McGarrigle Sisters. There's a lullaby for a child, a light blues in which a young son demands his action figures back, a tune about death and one about suicide, but this smartly understated CD is mostly about that "lousy husband." Williams' folkie voice is too sweet to make the bitterness of "You Said" work, but it's a wonderful song waiting for a Nashville star to turn it into a country hit. Williams is on target with the jaunty "I Had a Lover Once" ("perhaps you've had him, too"), the haunting "Current Takes Me Down" and the tuneful New Year's Eve reflection "A Little Worse for Wear." "This Is Me, Is That You" signals the emergence of a major new talent.
